ISCoS Textbook on Comprehensive Management of Spinal Cord Injuries
Recognizing the need of a comprehensive resource addressing management of Spinal Cord Injury (SCI) as a team based approach, ISCoS is compiling “ISCoS Textbook on Comprehensive Management of Spinal Cord Injuries”. The proposed textbook will be a comprehensive guide containing information for all disciplines involved in SCI management (doctors, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, nurses, vocational counselor, psychologist, assistive technologist, orthotists and social worker) with additional information for doctors.
Lippincott Williams and Wilkins is the publisher. The textbook is proposed to be launched during the ISCoS Annual Meeting at Montreal, Canada (14-16 May 2015).
The available textbooks cater to one of the several health professionals involved in management of SCI.This became obvious when ISCoS was compiling elearnSCI.org, a web based resource on comprehensive management of SCI.
The textbook aims at presenting the holistic approach for the management of SCI by the whole team. The simple and comprehendible presentation will help all disciplines to easily assimilate the knowledge. It will also have illustrations and figures to make text user friendly.
The textbook will have various new topics which are not covered in the currently available textbooks like:
- Pre-hospital care
- Assistive technology
- Psychosocial Management
- Pre-discharge planning
- Management of tetraplegic hand
- Nursing in SCI
- Nutritional management in SCI
- Outcome measures
- Neglected SCI
- Research advances in research
- Special consideration: geriatric, issue specific with women and children, challenges of management in developing economies
- Prevention of SCI
- Active rehabilitation after SCI
Though elearnSCI.org is a valuable tool for information dissemination, like other e-learning resources, it cannot replace the traditional teachings and textbooks. The two resources will complement each other in providing knowledge on comprehensive management of spinal cord injury.
The textbook will comprise of 80 Chapters in 10 different sections. 66 experts of ISCoS and affiliated societies from across the globe have been involved in authoring the chapters. The textbook is expected to have approximately 1400 pages.
The list of contents and names of authors are listed below.
